What a cluster solves.

A cluster distributes operation across several nodes. If one fails, the others take over. The goal is not more performance, but less dependence on a single device.

Limitations

What a cluster does not replace.

High availability protects against hardware failure — not against errors that are replicated correctly. This distinction is the most common misconception in cluster projects.

No substitute for backup: deleted or encrypted data is deleted on all nodes. A cluster reliably replicates the error too — see Backup & Recovery.
No substitute for security: an attacker with valid credentials can also reach the redundant environment.
No substitute for monitoring: if a node fails unnoticed, the cluster keeps running without a reserve — until the next one fails.
No substitute for documentation: in an emergency, it must be clear how a failover is supposed to work.
✓ Where simple flexibility rather than redundancy is needed, virtualisation without a cluster is usually sufficient.
