RPO and RTO

Two questions that come before the technology.

Before backup media and intervals are discussed, two questions must be answered. Both are business questions, not technical ones — and both are answered by the company, not by the service provider.

RPO — how much data may an outage cost? The answer determines how often backups are made.
RTO — how long may a system be down? The answer determines how thoroughly the restore has to be prepared.
✓ Both values can differ from system to system — a file server and a line-of-business application are rarely equally critical.

What is the difference between backup and ransomware protection?

A backup saves your data at regular intervals. A well-designed backup concept also protects these backups against encryption by ransomware, for example through immutable storage locations and separate access credentials.

How quickly can data be restored in an emergency?
